Well, i've already consumed my Easter bunny.
Bean-to-bar producer, Volo Chocolate unveiled the Essential Chocolate Bunny complete with masks and injection site bandaid for the COVID-19 Easter season. On first glance in person, these seemed rather small for a $12 outlay. Then I was assured that they are SOLID chocolate and weigh in at 67 grams.
Made of organic, transparent trade cacao from Haiti in a deep and intense 67% milk chocolate formulation with browned butter, sea salt and a whiff of cinnamon, this bunny KO's every other Easter treat. Darker than expected chocolate tones with a hint of caramel from the beurre noisette coat the palate with a luxurious plush mouthfeel.
This was one year that I was not among the 59% of the public that starts with the bunny ears and head first. No, I wanted to judge how hard it might be to bite through those thick haunches of solid chocolate. Though soft-ish in texture, still best approached by nibbling instead of trying to bite off a chunk.
For the rest of the year, I'm a fan of this 62% dark milk chocolate with browned butter in bar form, $8 for 2.5 ounces. At Christmas time, I bought a six-pack of assorted bars, $46.50, to divvy up for stocking stuffers.
Volo will be returning to the Saturday morning farmers market in Healdsburg when it opens for the season on April 17.
