Erzatzkaffee

There was an article in the Times this weekend about Nostalgia in Germany, and they mentioned a once-popular "fake" coffee made of "various grains and vegetables". Due to the retro boom, companies are again manufacturing it.

Can it be had in the US? Did we ever have anything similar over here? I noticed "chicory coffee" down south, and was told that the idea behind it was indeed to skimp on expensive ("real") coffee.

I can't say as I've noticed anything similar with "vegetables", though. Have not picked up my copy of "Grandma's Wartime Kitchen" yet - anything like that in there?
