I am turning 30 soon, and I want to have the kind of casual, drop-in, mingly sort of party that one would have at one's house, except that I don't want to have to clean up my house. :) I want to invite about 20 people. My only experience with birthday parties in restaurants has been for sit-down dinners, not the less formal event I have in mind. I want people to be able to come and leave at various times, hear each other talk, order dinner or just apps or just drinks, eat meat or not, and not have to pay more than $30 per head.
I was wondering if people who are habitues of Middlesex or The Enormous Room think that it would be possible to go early in the evening on a weeknight, stake out a couple of couches, and host a sort of birthday-salon. I assume these places don't take reservations, but would it be best to notify the management about bringing a large amorphous group?
Or is there another place, T-able, that would fit the bill better?
