Chef Joshua Smith continues his expanding empire on Moody Street in Waltham with EL RINCON DE MOODY'S, a taco bar and barbeque restaurant.
I went to their popup today for the taco bar, which is located next to the existing Moody's Deli/The Backroom/Crudo Bar, but has a separate entrance. The space is being finished up, so I sat at the bar in The Backroom. El Rincon will have some limited seating but will also serve takeout.
MENU (I ordered one of everything):
BARBACOA TACO: Slow-cooked beef, spicy morita sauce, radish, lime, cilantro ($4 each or 3 for $10)
CARNITAS TACO: Smoked heritage pork, green chili sauce, cucumber, cilantro...this was my FAV!!!
AL PASTOR TACO: Berkshire pork, pineapple, orange, pickled fresno chili, cilantro
CHIPS & GUACAMOLE: With fire roasted salsa and spicy house chips ($6)
Flavors were great (I filled out a comment card with my feedback, so I'll leave it at that), and these are good sized tacos, so I was totally stuffed. Currently the tortillas are not house-made, but they are apparently debating whether to make them in-house or not (I strongly encourage them to do so if they want to compete for Boston's best tacos!!!).
Chips/guac/salsa was interesting, since the guac, and especially the salsa, were very mild (but nice fire-roasted flavor in the purée-style salsa), but the chips were spicy. A bit disconcerting, but it works.
No information was available on what sort of BBQ they will be serving.
Also had a Trillium-Notch collaborative "I Predict a Riot" American pale lager on tap, which was delicious. Several other beers/cider were available on tap or in bottles (forgot to ask if The Backroom's extensive libations will be available, since there is no interior door connecting the restaurants, although I presume they must share a single liquor license).
Really looking forward to opening day, which happens to be on Cinco de Mayo (May 5th). Waltham is really got it going on when it comes to tacos (between Moody's, Amuleto next door, and Taqueria el Amigo).
