This is not a fancy place, and it isn't new. But I love it, and since I eat here all the time - like at least once every couple of weeks - I thought I would mention it. El Matador is great in part because it is pure diner. The same nice ladies waiting on you usually, and if they aren't there, an earnest teenager who hopefully is writing down your order. It is cheap, and has daily specials. You can get a gyros (I haven't) and a pork tenderloin sandwich (not bad), and a pretty excellent hamburger But it's really a Mexican place and the tortas and tacos are great. The tortas are giant, with fluffy nice rolls that are shiny on top. They have Menudo every day, it's a good version, with a slight vinegary cast to the very chile broth. And tripas! always! These are the best tacos ever, get them crispy, ooooh. With tomatoes and maybe a little sour cream (they're naturally salty). If you think you don't like fried chitlin, well, these tripas tacos may make you change your mind. They also have carnitas and roast pork and beef barbacoa. It's in KCKS on Merriam Lane near the intersection with Roe Lane, north of County Line (47th) and north of 35. It looks pretty down home from the exterior - potholes in the parking lot - but don't be put off by external things!

Oh yeah, also excellent Micheladas (slightly spicy, icy, Mexican tomato beer, choose your beer - I like it with Modelo).
