i finally checked out the food at this little bodega on manhattan avenue (between huron and green streets) in greenpoint... i've lived in the neighborhood five years but somehow if i wanted cheap mexican i would always go to acapulco instead. but today for lunch i decided to go for it, and i'm glad i did. a very nice señora made me two chicken tacos (there's no menu -- and it was the first thing that popped into my head to order in my rusty spanish) which were pretty good. shreds of chicken (unseasoned but very tasty) and cooked onion, a good helping of cilantro and shredded lettuce, a few slices of avocado, and a nice spicy salsa verde wrapped in double tortillas... nothing crazy, but it totally hit the spot. a man shelling some kind of beany-things from long pods (he told me what they were called, but i can't remember) at a table outside the little room in the back of the bodega where the lady cooks told me they were going into a sauce to be served with res (beef) and that the lady makes great tortas and tacos... since there's no menu, i guess it's the sort of thing where you just go in and ask for what you want and if they have it, they'll give it to you (i asked if she ever makes mole -- my favorite -- and she said she does, but not regularly, and she offered to call me the next time she makes it if i gave her my phone number)... anyway my spanish is not the best so i was just curious to know if any chowhounders are regulars and could suggest other good things for me to order there on my next visit...
