El Cerrito: Giovanni's Produce - 20 lb box of perfect, fresh Romanito tomatoes for $1.59 ... yep, about 8 cents a pound

If you can't use a whole box, they are also available by the pound for 20 cents.

Not being able to pass up a bargain, I just put away 20 lbs ... not one tomato in the box was bad.

These are supermarket variety tomatoes, but as good as the little baskets that are going for $3 - $4 at markets like Safeway.

Putting them in glass jars will keep them about three weeks.

The clerk at Giovanni said they had a big shipment yesterday so they should be available for a few days. Ask to get a box from the back since the ones in front are by the pound so people are picking some out.

However, it is creating quite the crowd stopper. Customers just stand outside trying to absorb the price. Those that do are buying 2 - 3 boxes.
