I used to live in West LA and frequented Echigo often - it was one of my favorite sushi joints. Moved eastward and became a regular Nozawa junkie, and almost forgot about the westside sushi spots.
I was so pleasantly surprised to visit Echigo last night (after nearly 3 years away) and still find the same quality and variety he had in the early days.
Some of the highlights include:
Sweet shrimp egg: I'd never had this before... it's hard to describe, but so much fun to eat! Delicious taste and texture - and you eat it almost like corn on the cob. A fun surprise (maybe it is a regular thing now, I haven't been there in a long time)
Uni: so sweet and fresh, I had to order two more
Ono: another fish that I don't encounter often in sushi form, but very fresh and delicious
Toro: melt-in-your-mouth perfect
The tuna dish he serves at the beginning. I don't know, the sauce just isn't my thing. My husband loved it though.
Crab roll: once you've had Nozawa's, it's tough to go back. Echigo's was good (I mean, that style of crab roll is almost always good), but a little underwhelming.
Service: perfect. He is so friendly. I like that he takes time to explain to you what you're eating and where it comes from. I don't know why this place is always so empty, but as a customer, it's nice because you get a really personal touch.
Even though it's almost a hour away, I think I'll have to make more frequent trips back!
