As I have noted here in the recent past, I consider this neighborhood..I am talking far east 50s..to be pretty much of a dining desert. So I was overjoyed (no, that is way too strong a word) to have had a good lunch today at Meltemi, on the corner of First Avenue and 5lst Street. While I might not make a special trip to the area to dine here, the meal was quite good and service was friendly, caring, and unpretentious. Since each of us had only one dish, I cannot give a review of the menu but suffice to say that the grilled calamari (appetizer which I had as main) were excellent; my father was very happy with the large portion of moussaka, and my mom likewise with the stuffed shrimp accompanied by rice (ordinary) and lightly dressed green salad (ditto). The room is pretty; hand-painted murals and bright paintings and ceramics create a cheerful, summery look. The place was filled at lunch; many of the diners appeared to be UN employees. Most of the lunch entrees are fish....I believe they are all under $20. Good variety of hot and cold appetizers, too.
