Durham: Hong Kong Restaurant

Having had a mixed experience with dim sum at Hong Kong Restaurant, my wife and I returned for dinner and had another mixed experience. We ordered off the Chinese menu and found the fare perfectly authentic, but all told not thrilling. We had salt and pepper spareribs, Chowhound-recommended beef chowfun, and eggplant hotpot. All three dishes were heavy and blunt, and a bit greasy, with no real depth or complexity of flavor. My wife, who's Taiwanese, does just as well and often quite a bit better at home. We will probably return simply because dining out on Chinese food is a entrenched custom with us, and we don't expect better elsewhere, but we will not bring much excitement or anticipation to the table.

I keep hearing it repeated that there are 50,000 Asians in the Triangle area. Why, as it seems, are there no good Chinese restraurants? Can someone explain this mystery?
