Here in Chicago Oct 15 is a sad day for us sailing folk, the harbors close and its time to stash the boat away till next year.
This years storage location is on the Calumet river.
Seven miles down stream from Calumet harbor, and just the other side of the O'Brien locks there is a warren of small boat yards that are oveshadowed by a huge landfill on the other side of the river.
The whole area has a kind of "Mad Max"feel to it and its a great place to hike around and see a lot of abondoned yachts of yesteryear being reclaimed by the earth.
Last in line is the M&M(Mike&Mickey)Windjammer Marina.
Mike and Mickey won't work on your boat, they don't have and overpriced chandelry. And they definetly don't take the American Express card.
What they do have however is one fine little riverside tavern complete with lots of knotty pine ,a rip roaring fire place, along with a commanding view of the dump and a kitchen that ROCKS.Had the cheeseburger,a killer half pounder with fresh cut, skin on fries, all cooked to perfection.
Fridays they do a fried cod special that might be worth trying out.
