Dumpling Report

debra | Jun 23, 200507:27 PM

based on recommendations from this board, THANK YOU!,we've been making the rounds to various dumpling houses.

We had sensational, perfectly Pan Fried Pork Dumplings (potstickers), and very good Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings --broth in the dumpling) at LUSCIOUS DUMPLING. For some reason I can't recall the details of the XLB because I was so overwhelmed by how perfect, and delicious the pan fried dumplings were. We didn't care for veggie dumplings, they were rather plain. They have a small menu (in english -save for the soup & dumpling combos which for some reason were not in english) on a card, you check the boxes, hand it in and they bring it out. Someone had a good looking soup, we asked the waiter which it was on the menu, and ordered it, it was ok.

We've had amazing boiled fish dumplings at DUMPLING HOUSE. Sounds weird, but WOW, incredibly flavorful. We also tried the pan fried pork dumplings -very disappointing, they were deep fried (I think they deep fry all of the "pan fried" dumplings), and not that great. Go with the boiled and definitly try the fish dumplings, you won't be sorry. (We didn't get to try the chow ma mian, which was also recommended by hounds, hand cut noodles in brown bean sauce, it looked like that was on nearly every table) This place was large, with a big menu, but we were doing dumplings.

We love the juicy dumplings at DIN TAI FUNG, I like the delicate thin skin to these dumplings. They were out of the "small dumplings with soup" so we didn't get to try them. We also ordered the Shanghai Rice cakes, which were delicious, if you like that chewy texture of the little pounded rice disks. Very flavorful chicken soup, and a very good spinach w/garlic. Fun to watch them make the dumplings right before your eyes as you wait --and wait you will if you don't get there early. This place gives you a small menu/card to fill out before you're even seated.

Still on my "list" for dumplings (from CH recs)are Dumpling Master (monteray park), Mei Long Village (San Gabriel), Heavy Noodling (MP), and Kuans (montebello)
