When I got the word early this morning that my dad would be discharged, my first call was to Duarte's in Pescadero to see if I could order a pie for pick up today taking the coast route home. "No problem for this afternoon", was the answer, "All the pies are $20."
I was there at about 3 o'clock today and the countergal said they were still accepting orders for pies. Just behind her was a big stack of pie boxes and the staff were folding more. Duarte's will be open tomorrow but closed on Thanksgiving. There was also a sign up that the pumpking pies (only) are available at Cunha's in HMB and the Piazza markets in San Mateo and Palo Alto.
I had brought a piece of the pecan pie home to my mother a few years ago. When I reminded her of that, she remembered how good it was and stopped being cranky that I'd taken a detour. The pie was still warm when I got it, and my mom cradled it in her lap for the rest of the drive home to Salinas.
