dopes/soft drinks and Charlestonians

Ya'll may not know that soft drinks or sodas were often called dopes by many folks in the south and perhaps other places as well. Coca-Cola was invented in Atlanta in the late 1800's and I have heard that the original product may have contained cocaine and suspect that is why there were called "dopes". Can anyone shed light on this possibility?

Another post on this board joked about Charlestonians so I though I'd share mine. So how many Charlestonians does it take to change a light bulb?

Three.

One to pour the drinks,
One to call the help,
and One to talk about how wonderful the old light bulb was.
