Tough for us to get a res today so four of us took a chance on Don Peppe's in Ozone Park. Woudn't bother going back. The food was just okay, service not so pleasant and the prices high.
We did thoroughly enjoy their baked clams which were touted on this board, however the mussels marinara had more than one truly "bad" mussels in the bunch.
Question: The Shrimp Marinara is listed at $21. We asked if pasta came with it and were told that it did not, although we could have the entree served over pasta if we like. We chose linguine. The bill comes and there is a separate $11 charge for the linguine!
I double checked the price with the waiter, who said that that indeed is the price...I personally think that's pretty outrageous. $11 for a base of pasta underneath the shrimp marinara!! Did we get bamboozled? I didn't want to take it further, but does anyone who is a fan of this place know if this is customary??
Also, we noticed that the family that came in 1/2hour after we seated(we were told we needed to switch tables to accomodate them...which we agreeably did)got much better service from the same waiter serving us. He undid all of the napkins for the women (mammas) at that table..spoke Italian to them, etc.
I have no problem with people being treated warmly as returning regulars but if their mothers are good enough to be given this "treatment" so is mine, plus we were very courteous and friendly to our waiter from the start.
I guess if we lived in the neighborhood, we'd return but living in Jackson Heights, I'd just as soon go somewhere else.
