I usually read reviews and don't submit them....but here goes.
Four of us checked out the new place in the hood tonight; we made the reservations before the article in today's L.A. Times. The place was packed, with a nice neighbordhood feel. It's a very comfortable space and the food was quite good.
We did rice balls (arrancini) and a beet salad with barrata to start. Both very nice, especially the (roasted) beet salad.
Everyone had a different main course. I had spaghetti and meatballs. Meatballs were very tasty and pasta was good, though I found the sauce a bit bland. A very nice sized portion. Others had filet mignon bits....hanger steak.....and a margherita pizza. Raves about the steak dishes. (filet came with mashed potatoes.....hanger steak with a wilted lettuce salad with bacon).
The pizza was served on a board....nice presentation.....and my friend said it was very tasty, though the sauce was, like the spaghetti sauce, a little bland.
We shared the gelato trio for dessert....vanilla, caramel and rocky road. Very nice.
Wine selections are limited, though interesting. Especially the Italian wines. (I know....duh....)
When was the last time you saw a half bottle of Amarone on a two page wine list? I appreciated the sense of adventure in the choices. And the server offered a taste of one of the whites my friends were curious about.
Server was delightful....well-informed and interested to know we lived in the "hood" and liked to frequent good local places. One of the managers stopped by as well to welcome us and make sure we were happy.
My favorite local hangout is Blair's, but I'll certainly add this to my list and be back on a regular basis. (especially when the crowd dies down a bit) I like finding places where I can dine solo...especially spur of the moment. I find Blair's a great place for that. Little Dom's might be a bit too much of a "scene" for that right now.....there aren't that many "two-tops" and they were all filled with two people. There were seats at the bar, but all full most of the night. In the meantime, I'll bring some friends with me to check it out.
