Can this dogwood be saved?

Hi, I didn't know where to post this because it is not vegetable gardening, so "not about food". The night before last we had a very heavy wet snowfall through the night and woke up to the top trunk of the 20+ year old Dogwood had split into three.

My husband says it is not salvageable after we cut below the the split. I wanted to find out if anyone else here might be able to give some advice. I think since the entire top crown is gone, we would have to dig up the root ball and move it since it won't be attractive in the front of the house and replace it with something else. But will the exposed cut still be prone for rot, disease, and insects or can that be prevented in some way?

Having a heckuva week, first lost our beloved dog who would be 14 today, she succumbed to the congestive heart failure, and now lost the dogwood. Its blooms were so glorious this year, too.

I wish I would have known and realized, I would have gotten up a couple times in the middle of the night to shake the snow off the tree leaves and petals!
