Dog Meat and Monkey Brains

The Chowhound contributors sometimes kvetch about where the meat comes from. We had a lot of jive on the Jay Leno Show about the South Korean government regulating the eating of dogs. One of the Leno comics was a Mexican dude from South LA. Jay asked him how it was living there and commented that there were a lot of Koreans living down there. The guy said that they "make great neighbors but they sure scare the #*# out of my dog."
When I was in France many years ago a French companion and I were driving on the Autoroute d'Sud when we saw a herd of beautiful horses on a hillside. My companion said -- "Por manger" --for eating -- and I thought of the shops in Paris with beautiful horses' heads in their windows --like the movie producer in "The Godfather". - only different.

In Chinatowns all over America we have shops who sell fresh rabbit, chicken, duck, various birds. In some places in the world they do the same with cats and dogs --and horses too. You can go into places all over America --pick out a lovely young rabbit, watch it killed and dressed for you and leave with the meat under your arm. Do people think that all this flesh they eat comes packaged from heaven? "Nature is red -in tooth and claw." -our teeth too.

I hear that the Chinese eat monkey brains fresh. They sit around a special table --the monkey is prepared by opening the skull while alive so that the brain is fully exposed --the head is inserted from below through an oval opening in the table and the people eat the brain by the spoon-fulls. Later the rest of the meat is consumed in other dishes.

Do any Asians on this list know the provenance of the Chinese dish called "Three Peeps"?

Let's toast the willful self-deception about meat that makes hypocrisy the stock and trade of our society. I eat meat and I know where it comes from and how it is obtained. I just saw a delightful looking little Shar-pei on the weekend and I wondered how those jowls would taste -deep-fried -- with a fine Chianti. :-) That's a real chowhound mentality.
