My original target for my first bite in New Mexico of my May visit was Dog House Drive-In. However, when my travel day got off track, i switched to Duran's for table service and more comfort for a longer break. But after a not entirely satisfactory lunch https://www.chowhound.com/post/durans... , Dog House was still on my mind.
Just a few blocks away on the same street as Duran ... how could I not stop? I headed to Dog House. I ordered the chili dog with cheese and onion wrapped to go, $4.54. But first a couple bites to taste at the counter before special delivery of the remainder to my hosts in Santa Fe.
The Farmland brand beef and pork foot long hot dogs are split then griddled to sear them on the plancha alongside the warming soft buns. Cheese sauce is heated and ladled out right from the can. The thick and almost gooey chili sauce is medium hot with a taste reminiscent of Gebhardt canned tamales to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if some tamales were ground to thicken the brew. No beans nor visible meat in this chili.
The ladies were so sweet to me and demonstrated a lot of pride in their work. I chatted with the owner who arrived on my way out. He said it’s been a good more than 50-year run. What’s old is new again with a new generation discovering Dog House and making it hip.
