What's Up Dog! -- Gourmet Grilled Sausages

Still exploring the my new office neighborhood around Market and First, I ventured down to Howard St. today and stopped by the nascent (been in business less than a year) What's Up Dog! hot dog and sausage stand at Beale and Howard. It's on the Northeast corner, doing business ostensibly as a hot dog stand operating from a cart underneath the partial remnants of an old building that had been situated at that corner for many years.

Menu is pretty simple, with several grilled sausages in addition to their signature 8" New York Style all beef franks ($3.00 each). Sausages include Italian Calabrese, Polish Kielbasa, Louisiana Hot Link, Lemon Chicken, Smoked Chicken Apple, Santa Fe Turkey, and Bockwurst (all $3.50 each).

They also offer corn dogs, chili/cheese dogs, chili/cheese fries, garlic fries, regular fries, veggie dogs (two kinds of Tofurkey -- Kielbasa and Sweet Italian), and even an Atkins dog sans bun, but topped with lettuce and tomatoes.

Had the Polish dog today, which was very tasty when wrapped in a bun. Nice, spicy flavor and grilled to perfection. All sausages come on a warm, lightly toasted soft french roll. Plenty of condiments from which to choose. Fries were generous and good, too -- definitely not the best, but a nice option vs. standard potato chips (they also have Miss Vicky's in three flavors). No liquor served.

According to the head cook, franks used are Nathan's with natural skin casings -- the kind that "snap" when you bite into them and that you are likely to find from the ubiquitous NY street carts. Sausages are both Saag's and Schwarz -- depending on what's ordered.

Hard to say just how What's Up Dog! will fare when the new Dogzilla opens up just half a block away on Howard in the next 2 months or so (according to electricians working inside today). I hear Dogzilla will have quite an extensive menu -- similar in quantity (if not quality) to World Sausages or Rosamunde -- but for now, What's Up Dog! seems to have a leg up on the dog competition in this particular south of Market neighborhood.
