The Dish on Dumplings

We live at the edge of Chinatown and are big dumpling fans, so decided recently to compare the current state of the three well-regarded purveyors of cheap tasty dumplings in the vicinity: the two "Fried Dumplings" on Mosco and Allan St. and the "Dumpling House" on Eldridge.

We would rank them as follows:

1) Dumpling House
2) Fried Dumplings on Mosco
3) Fried Dumplings on Allan

What clearly sets "Dumpling House" apart is that they fry each individual order. Both "Fried Dumplings" cook a bunch and leave them warming on the grill. The result is that "Dumpling House's" dumplings are juicier and more delicate. The dumplings at "Fried Dumplings" in contrast tend to toughen and dry out the longer they're waiting to be served, especially at the Allan St. location. We went back several times and found this always to be the case. The fillings are in certain respects quite comparable, though "Dumpling House's" seem the more savory if only because of the superior preparation.
