I went to Bouley on Saturday for a special anniversary dinner, and I have to say that I left disappointed. The room is romantic and lovely (though almost too quiet for my tastes--no one seemed to speak above a whisper), but the food was certainly not as transcendent as I had anticipated. My husband and I both had the tasting menus, and, aside from a magnificent first course (phyllo-crusted shrimp, squid, crabmeat, scallop in ocean broth), we were underwhelmed by our meal. More than that, we were shocked by how quickly things moved. Immediately after finishing one course, our plates were removed and replaced within 5 minutes. (Our six-course meal lasted under 2 hours, which is ridiculous, in my mind.) And a few courses seemed like they had been sitting out for a while, prior to being served. I know that it wasn't just us -- the couples at neighboring tables expressed similar complaints (and also were dismayed by the small portion sizes).
Was this just an off night? I know how highly people here recommend Bouley, so I left feeling more confused than anything else. And I really wanted to love it!
