Dirk's Fish and Gourmet

After learning of Dirk's Fish & Gourmet's recent opening, my husband and I decided that it would be a good weekend for oysters. Dirk, formerly of Burhop's on North Avenue, opened his new shop located at 2070 N. Clybourn Avenue, just about three weeks ago. It's a bit smaller than Burhops, but continues to have a nice selection of fish, including three types of oysters, Fanny Bay, Blue Point and my favorite Kumamoto. I was favorably impressed by his tank, which had not only live lobsters, but huge Dungeness crab, not a familiar sight in Chicago. Dirk is very helpful and is willing to procure unusual items. For instance, I will be picking up what Dirk assured would be the last of the season's shad roe this weekend. My experience with him in the past has been very positive - I have found him to be particularly committed to customer service. The fish selection is wider than that at the Fish Guy, if not, perhaps, as pristine in quality. His location, however, is probably more convenient for most in that he is just a few blocks from Sam's and the Whole Foods on North Avenue. Moreover, he is quite suitably located two doors down from the Wine Crier. A nice shop, though a bit pricey, implicating the debate between service and cost in the retail wine market, a subject perhaps for another post.

And the kumamotos were excellent.
