Seldom go west of Beverly Hills but was around Venice and Santa Monica yesterday so decided to try the much praised Tasting Kitchen on Abbott Kinney. They make their own non-alcoholic drinks and the ginger one was about the best I've ever had. Also the shrimp pasta was very good and the two glasses of a sparkling rose were fine as well. The two starters we had that were oddly called entrees on the menu were the artichoke pieces with greens and a poached egg with morels. Both were bright tasting and flavorful, kind of designer healthy. I had the gigli pasta with Luciana sausage which was okay but basically bland and flat. Not anywhere close to the terrific pastas at Bucati, Mozza or Sotto. Also the wait time between courses was interminable. Maybe L.A. Weekly included this place in their "99 Essential Restaurants" issue because they felt they needed to balance all those offbeat, ethnic joints on the east side with some west side picks. However, for the price of $140 with tip my girl friend and myself thought it was hardly worth it.
