Finally dragged myself and the gf out in the rain last night to try the slightly upscale Indian Bistro on West Portal that chowhounds mentioned two weeks ago. Yum, yum yum, go there! Service was friendly, attentive, accurate, and polite. It was busy when we got there at 6:30p.m. and had a steady crowd coming and going through 8p.m. They seem to do a lot of take-out biz as well and packaged our leftovers very nicely (but did a major faux pas when removing our plates, of stacking the dishes on top of each other, with food touching bottom of plate, ick!).
Pappadum (one piece of plain, one with cumin seeds)
When this arrived it had been sitting out on the counter and was soggy, we told the waiter and he brought a new piping hot order, crispy and good. The mint sauce that accompanies was better than average. $2.
Lamb chops (three small thick chops) $15.
These were terrific, cooked to order med rare with spicing hot enough to blend with the lamb flavor but not overpower it.
Bengan Bharta $9.
A decent slightly smoky version of a classic eggplant prep, with a good creamy texture, tasting of cardamon.
Bhindi Masala $9.
I am an Okra freak and this is the second best Indian Okra I have tasted (Naan and Chutney is #1), not slimy, full of crunch but cooked through with lots of ginger and garlic.
Palak Paneer $9.
A well executed version with spinach you could identify and the cheese (housemade) was soft, fresh, and plentiful. We kept saying it was pillowy!
House Basmati is basic, good, a vehicle for mopping up the sauces. $3.
Tandoori Roti- one piece of average bread $2.
Goat Cheese Naan- one piece of heaven on a plate $3.
Raita-Housemade, very rich and creamy yogurt, lick the bowl good. $3.
Kachumber-A refreshing lime infused cuminy dressing made this tomato and cucumber salad fabulous. $3.
They serve Wine and Beer.
