Had dinner with my wife at The Modern last night (Valentine's Day) and it was excellent. Since the restaurant is brand new and Danny Meyer's restaurants often find their footing after a little seasoning, we were prepared for mishaps either in service or in the food. Wrong!
The food was extremely good and, as many extra dishes were brought out, we had a reasonable sample of the menu. The service was very competent, although it still has a little way to go to be as good as the service is at his other restaurants.
Food highlights were several early amuse that included a fish tartare, beggers purse, small ravioli on a thinly sliced beet. A sweet pea soup with barley was very good as were bacon-wrapped langostinos. Our main courses were chicken cooked three-ways (roasted, as a sausage, chicken leg cassoulet) and a roast cod with thinly sliced chorizo crust. Both desserts - chocolate souffle and panna cota - were first rate.
All in all a very good meal, particularly for a new restaurant on Valentine's Day!
