We're Midwesterners planning a trip from Manchester, NH, up through Portland and Bangor, ME and then to the Maritime provinces of Canada (but would be willing to go 30-50 miles off the track for a real good chowhound place). What kind of diners and other casual restaurants can we visit that would give us a good feel for New England?
Atmosphere is as important as the food, and I'm interested in Yankee Pot Roast and other regional non-seafood dishes, not lobster or other ocean critters. I'd also like to know about places that stay open all night.
An old copy of Roadfood mentions a few Maine spots: Cole Farms in Gray, The Enterprise in Cornish, Line House Restaurant in York and Moody's Diner in Waldoboro. Any comments on these places?
