Dim Sum Warning

Ellen | May 27, 2003 01:46 PM

My friends and I went to Mandarin Court on Mott Street Sunday for Dim Sum. Without a doubt it was not only the worst dim sum I have ever had but possibly some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had. I had gotten the recommendation off of this board so I thought I'd share my experience.

Nothing we had was even vaguely competent by any standard. We got there at noon and were seated immediately at the front of the restaurant closest to the kitchen and dumbwaiters, yet almost everything that came to our table was cold or lukewarm. We tried many many dishes and each one was more disappointing than the last in terms of flavor as well as temperature. Even the shrimp dumplings were awful, and I've never met a shrimp dumpling I didn't like. We also ordered Singapore Noodles to try something from the menu -- they were tasteless and greasy, between the five of us we didn't finish them -- unheard of! And we constantly had to flag down the staff for more water or tea and to order from the menu.

Last month I went to Golden Unicorn (also a CH recommendation). While hardly outstanding it was consistently good and beat Mandarin Court by a mile.

So what should we try next? I used to eat as HSF but its been years. Are they any good any more? Is Dim Sum GoGo a good alternative?
