Dim Sum in Oakland/Alameda County?

Daniel Schacht | Mar 2, 2001 03:37 AM

I've checked out some of the Dim Sum discussions and they are very SF-focused. What about the Chinatown on this side of the bay? My dad will be in town this weekend and I was hoping to treat him to Dim Sum in Oakland or nearby. Of course, if the dim sum at Yank Sing is so much better, we'll make the trek. I went to one place in Oakland's Chinatown (on a corner, green front) that I liked, but I am new to Dim Sum. In general, I've been disappointed by Chinese restaurants in Alameda County and don't have a favorite (note: I like inexpensive restaurants). It seems to be the missing link. That and barbeque - I'm a Midwest snob about that.

Also, a little tip - there's a small family-run Mexican restaurant on the corner of E 12th and 38th Ave in Fruitvale/Oakland (a short walk from the Fruitvale BART) that is a great eating experience. I believe it's called La Morena, but I could be wrong about that. They're only open Fri, Sat and Sun. How about a huge discussion on the best Mexican food in Oakland? Would the server handle that? I have this Fruitvale area sussed out pretty well. I tend towards El Faralito's, though there's a place where San Leandro Ave meets Fruitvale Ave that I like better, but it's a bit more expensive.

Everyone probably knows this, but Sa Wooie (spelling?) is great! Best Thai place I've found yet. I like Plaern, too; great staff. Alright, enough comments. I really only wanted suggestions for Oakland/Alameda Co. dim sum places.
