Another Dim Sum Lunch at Joy Luck in Oakland with Yimster et al

RWCFoodie (Karen) | May 5, 200412:10 AM

A hungry table of 10 gathered together by Mr. & Mrs. Yimster met today to enjoy the $1.50 per plate regular dim sum items plus the quail with pepper/salt from the $4.99 special menu at Joy Luck in Oakland. Another detail, most dim sum houses charge by the person for tea; not so at Joy Luck.

This was a special event as it included traveling Chowhound Iona (sorry if spelling is wrong) Lockwood from the Portland OR area, her equally Chowish husband Bob and their Chowish friends Eileen and her husband Mike from Fremont; great to meet you! Other happy attendees included ChowFun, Gordon Wing, Chowfish and me. An aside, Iona told us that they can't get good dim sum in the Portland area so when the craving strikes, they just go to Vancouver! I know the next time I'm headed that way I will check in with her for tips.

Joy Luck has been written up several times so I won't go into detail of the dishes we had, suffice it to say that we were all stuffed to the bursting point for the unbelievable sum of $8.00 each which included a generous tip! I always question Yimster when he does the calculations for these meals because I just can't believe that you can eat the way we did today for such a paltry amount, but it's true.

As stuffed as we were, lured by the promise of custard tarts almost as good as Golden Gate, Yimster took us to a bakery a couple of blocks away to check them out. Tarts are buy 2 get 1 free at this place which means they net out at 3 for $1.00! Yimster, playing on ChowFun's well-known addiction to custard tarts, made him treat us all before he would give up the location! While it was generally agreed that they are not quite as good as those at GG, they are great for the price. Gordon told us that they're the only ones he'll go back for in Oakland.
