Dim Sum

Josh Small | Aug 17, 2001 12:49 AM

I just wanted to start up the yum cha debate again.
Each Sunday for a couple of years now I've gone to
dim sum. Here are some thoughts, opinions and
anecdotes.

I used to liken dim-sum to going into battle. That's
probably because I was eating at Jing Fong. Decent
food, cheap, but the place is so large that the
carts don't circulate well. I've also experienced
some soggy cherng fun (rice noodle).

After a while I tried Golden Unicorn. Wow! Great
laa mai fun (sticky rice), succulant soft shell crab,
and the cha siu bow (roast pork buns) are delicious.
While slightly more expensive, it is definitely a
step up from Jing Fong. Oh, and it has the best
mango pudding in Manhattan (and tied for the best in Hong Kong, IMO!).

I now go to GU almost exclusively, but occasionally I visit HSF. It is cheaper than GU, and the food is better than Jing Fong. A smaller, less chaotic alternative.

Any recommendations for a new place to try?
