Diet Soda Cake

A friend of mine heard about this in a weight watchers meeting. Has anyone tried it? A recipe I found on the web is below.

Basically, instead of adding eggs and oil to a packaged cake mix, you add a can of diet soda, saving the calories ... WAIT !! WAIT !! ...

I'am already ahead of some of you. To the ineveitable comment of "WHY WOULD ANYONE USE A CAKE MIX?", the question remains ....

Could you replace the eggs and oil in ANY cake recipe thereby saving calories.

Since I don't like diet soda, could you use sparkling water? It seems the soda would make the cake too sweet. Is there something in the carbonation that makes this work? Or can you just replace the wet ingrediants with a equal amounts of any other liquid ingrediants including plain tap water?
