(DFW--Plano) Hermosa's Bakery and Pupuseria

On a tip from Teresa Gubbins' excellent blog, News You Can Eat (http://tgubbins.blogspot.com/), my son and I stopped by Hermosa's Bakery and Pupuseria for lunch last week.

It's a small place in an inconspicuous strip mall location behind Shipley's Donuts and Chubby's Family Restaurant on Parker just west of Alma in Plano (930 W. Parker Rd. #420, ph. 972-398-6672). Don't expect anything fancy, but the place is clean and well-kept.

Hermosa's has been open for about a year, according to the gentleman who owns the restaurant. It is a working bakery with a broad selection of some standard items (croissants, meringues, birthday cakes, etc.) as well as a selection of Salvadoran specialties, including bread pudding with plantain topping, meat pies and pupusas.

In addition to the bakery displays, Hermosa's has about 20 tables, and serves breakfast and lunch. (We learned yesterday that they are closed on Sundays.)

My only exposure to Salvadoran food to date had been Gloria's, and, while I enjoyed the food at the original Oak Cliff location, I admit that I have been less than enchanted with Gloria's food and service at its locations on Lemmon and in Frisco. Based on my one stop at Hermosa's, I think they have Gloria's beat by a mile.

My son and I both ordered the "Usulután special," which included two pupusas and a large tamál, rice and curtido (Salvadoran cole slaw). The fillings were all pork based, but I am not expert enough to speculate how they were prepared. The special was preceded by very good tortilla chips, with chile/tomato salsa and a thin black bean salsa.

For drinks, there are several aguas de fruta available, plus Latin American and U.S. sodas. Service is very friendly, with the owner and cooks appearing genuinely pleased to have anglos exploring the menu.

I highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area and are eager to learn more about Salvadoran food and pastries.
