Death of a pig - "Doug Havel slaughtered his first pig when he was 22. It was his father’s pet pig. Its name was Fred."

“After we shot it,” Havel says in the dry humor his job demands, “it was Dead Fred.”

Came across this interesting site on the life, death and "rebirth" of a pig. That last part is where most of us participate ... in the kitchen or restaurant.

The longer version is on Nick Bergus' blog, who writes about many things including food

He is an engaging writer. Dough Havel runs a small slaughterhouse. Bergus writes of the pig farmer in that piece "He insists that there is a right way and a wrong way to raise animals ... he abhors the modern methodology.“The hogs in those confinement lots are insane. Literally insane. You can just look at them and tell,” he says. “Humans would be too, if they were packed in like those hogs. If you’re going to call yourself a farmer, you should farm. Everybody mass produces meat.”
