i know places like this in europe exist -- i've been to one in paris, and one in london -- but whats the deal with dc's recent underground dinners? just hipsters and places like that celebrity chef + really important subject of conversation pop-up that happened last year? or is this the real deal, real cooks that want to try new things? whats up?

On March 24, we will open our apartment home to an exclusive number of DC-area residents. Dinner will begin leisurely at 7 p.m. The following menu of four courses and three wine pairings will be served; vegetarian and dietary restricted needs will be addressed on an individual basis with advance notice.
a selection of three starters – oyster & avocado, beet bouillon & preserved egg yolk, scallops & radishes
from the sea – ink-braised octopus, malt vinegar parsnip, leek, purple basil
from the land – tiger lily chicken, six mushrooms, leeks, chinese cabbage
dessert – chocolate pudding, banana ice cream, pine nut caramel
followed with a selection of cheeses, mignardise of apple, honey, szechuan pepper
Suggested donation is approximately $40, which will cover only the cost of ingredients and wine. Places are limited and demand is high -- to confirm your attendance and book a seat, please RSVP by e-mailing email@example.com. Guests are highly encouraged to bring fellow food-lovers and curious diners, and will receive notice of Chez Le Commis' location in the days leading up to the meal. Chez Le Commis is Metro accessible and highly walkable.
