DC for 2 days, off-the-beaten path/interesting restaurants?

Hi everyone, I'm making a quick trip from NYC to DC the first weekend in November just to get out of the city for a minute. I'm an amateur foodie with preferences for authentic food. I don't really do fine dining (read: pretentious) but love to visit restaurants that really have a love for its ingredients. I have a few "limitations" that I don't really find to be THAT limiting- I don't eat red meat or pork but am flexible with chicken or vegetarian options. I rarely encounter a menu or cuisine that I can't eat because of this, except perhaps an all beef bbq place (Fogo de Chao). I eat all different type of cuisines regularly and so far haven't discovered a cuisine I didn't like. I'm going to be walking, taking the metro or bus so I'd prefer any place that's easily accessible by public transportation. I know DC must have some interesting, delicious restaurants that I can discover. I love smaller, more intimate, one of a kind and interesting restaurants...any ideas?
