For over 20 years, the Half-Day Cafe, on College by the College of Marin, ruled as Marin's best brunch destination. Last year, after hearing negative news, I checked it out and experienced a shockingly bad breakfast, which I reported here.
Yesterday I checked back again. I'm glad to report they seem to be back on track, and it's safe to suggest them for a get-together with an old friend, or a place to take your visiting cousin.
The menu shows evidence of new ownership within the past couple of years or so, but the hostess denied this. Hmmm -- there are too many departures from previous tradition for me to think there's not another hand at the helm, and these changes IMO are ill-advised ones.
They'd always been known for their house-baked muffins and scones, with today's choices listed on a blackboard. Nowadays they feature scones and don't have daily muffin choices, (alas). I ordered scrambled eggs and hash browns and a lemon-blueberry scone. Everything was good. The tasty scone was huge and rather heavy, a meal in itself. This cost $5.50 - pricy for basic egg breakfast but not bad when you factor in the enormous scone.
I'm glad the Half-Day Cafe is still a chic and viable place for breakfast and lunch
