Long-time board favorite, Da Flora, was infamous for its salty founder/owner, Flor, unique Venetian-influenced dishes and a terrific wine list. I was lucky to be introduced to her by one of her regulars at a chowdown dinner https://www.chowhound.com/post/sf-16690 and we always got along fine. https://www.chowhound.com/post/da-flo... Four years ago, Flor and her partner passed on the restaurant to their long time chef, Jen McMahon and her husband. Some how for as much as I've enjoyed Da Flora, I'd not been back since this change. So it bumped to the top of my list for take-out last week while making the rounds of black-owned restaurants.
Ordering is by phone, and no credit card pre-payment was asked of me. Maybe because this was a small order and I'd be there in 20 minutes. Da Flora has set up two outdoor tables in the parking space on the side street. And the IG timeline shows some additional outdoor seating. Conveniently, there's just enough room to park a car in between the barriers and the crosswalk to dash inside for pick-up.
The sweet potato gnocchi with sherry cream, crisp bacon and dusted with parmigiano, $15, that I've had many times before was like a visit with an old friend. Soothing, satisfying and so familiar in its deliciousness. And of course, the famed foccacia too, with an extra piece to toast for breakfast the next day. The flatbread seemed denser and heavier than in my memory.
Three days ago Da Flora posted this on IG:
"If you love our restaurant.. PLEASE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR 26 YEAR OLD NEIGHBORHOOD BUSINESS NOW!!!!! We have outdoor seating available, take out, gift certificates and T-shirts.
This is the time to be patronizing the places that you want to see make it through the pandemic. Everything on Da Flora's menu is less than $20 and is consistently good. Won't you help keep a good thing going?
