Is customer service declining at chain supermarkets?

I find customer service going rapidly downhill at larger chain supermarkets. Personally, I am getting tired of clogged, gridlocked checkout lines with too few personnel assigned to front end operations.

More and more stores are moving toward U-scan lanes...these can be a godsend on occasion, but simply not practical when buying large quantities of groceries, using coupons, or paying with a check.

Are these large corporations cutting back on customer service as a cost-cutting method? If this is the case, it's the customers who suffer.

Fellow 'hounds, what has your experience been with customer service in chain supermarkets?
