One of these days I'll get around to listing my favourite international grocery stores. Close to tops must be India Sweets and Spices on Venice at Bagley. It's full of guilty pleasures such as frozen parathas from Malaysia (scarily high percentage of palm oil but irresistible), the extruded fried snacks called murukku, and aam papad, the sticky mango sweet.
Recently I was thrilled to discover the long-sought curry leaves [Murraya koenigii] for sale at India Sweets and Spices. Curry leaves are indispensable in South India particularly and have a uniquely wonderful fragrance mainly composed of monoterpene hydrocarbons (see link). Ask at the counter 'coz they weren't on display, the large bag is super cheap and you'll want to use them fresh or freeze rapidly. My half-baked "Indian" cooking has been a whole lot tastier of late.
