New place, possibly a New York chain?, opened on 19th and M a few months back, and I finally got a chance to try it last week. Awesome value. This compares very favorably to Mi Cuba Cafe up in Columbia Heights. Equally good value, bigger menu, slightly less idiosyncratic.
There's takeout on the first floor (steam trays), and table service upstairs. Very easy to get a huge plate of solid Cuban food for $10, with fast and friendly service for the weekday lunchtime crowd. I enjoyed the fried pork platter, where I opted for yellow rice and sweet plantains as sides. Yummy and huge portions. A colleague had a roast pork sandwich with plantains inside ("roast pork with a twist"), which he enjoyed.
What a great place! Will try some of the interesting fruit shakes next time.
