I posted a while back about some maki I'd had in DC with some sort of spicy crunchy stuff inside which I could not identify. This weekend I finally found the stuff at the Kotobukiya sushi counter at Porter Exchange. The mystery ingredient is....tempura flakes. You can get them added to any maki for 50 cents, what a find! It was my first visit to the sushi counter, I was very happy with the freshness and price.
I then sampled a beanpaste-filled donut from the Japanese bakery stand. Wow. This definitely rivaled the jelly donut I tried at Flour this summer. Very yeasty. I highly recommend it.
