Are credit card payments cheating waitstaff?

Howard_2 | Feb 25, 201706:10 PM

I have a message I would like to post on some forum frequented by restaurant waitstaff. I have not yet been able to find a good forum. I would appreciate any tips anyone might have on where to post this.

Here's a situation that has happened to me TWICE at 2 different restaurants, one of them a chain and the other a somewhat upscale restaurant.

The server brought me the bill and I gave presented my credit card. The server took the credit card, ran it, and came back with the bill + my credit card + the statement that printed off when the card was run. That receipt showed the amount of the bill (without tip), and the last 4 digits of my card.

So far, so good.

I added a tip, totalled the amounts, signed the bill, and retrieved my card.

For security reasons, my credit card company sends me an email every time something is charged to the card. When I got the email for the meal, it showed only the amount of the food bill and NOT the tip.

I later phoned the server at the first restaurant to inform her of the situation and got a somewhat confusing answer, the gist of which was "don't worry about it, I'll get the tip, I always compare my tips with charges before my shift ends."

But my credit card has not been billed for the amount of the tip.

What's going on here? Are these employees being cheated?
