The creator of the grocery supercenter has died

beachmouse | Nov 26, 201110:04 AM

Fred Meijer, age 91

Her created the first Supercenter in his Meijer Thrifty Acres, and opened up a shopping experience where you could pick up an oil filter, a set of queen-sized bedsheets, and a bag of hamster bedding along with your rack of lamb, beer, package of arugula and other grocery needs. (And don't forget to pick up an ice cream cone at the Purple Cow ice cream bar on the way out.)

He apparently turned down more than one offer from Walmart who tried to buy him out and then copied his supercenter format.
