Found myself near Xi Da Jie yesterday and checked out a couple of places.
One is called Chun Yang Shui Jiao and is a good place for jiaozi in red oil. There are only eight items on the menu actually, and there is a picture menu if you are Chinese challenged. 4 rmb for a little bowl of ten, not cheap by local standards but definitely worth it. They do use a ton of garlic in the dressing. It is part of a chain with other locations in town but I have not found chains to be terribly consisent here, unfortunately.
The other place is called Xiao Tan Dou Hua. The specialty is dou hua but you can also get things like jiaozi, dan dan mian, and other kinds of noodles. They have various types of toppings for the dou hua, which was amazing. Pictured is niu rou (beef) dou hua. Chinese only menu.
Chun Yang Shui Jiao 春阳水饺 address: 金色夏威夷A座 The building is a big complex on Xi Da Jie, near Ba Bao Jie. A bit challenging to find since there are tons of eating places but it's on the inside of the courtyard on the ground floor.
Xiao Tan Dou Hua 小谭豆花 address 西大街86附13号 On the same block (I think, or the next one), just further west on the corner.
Both places can get very very busy, as in people crowding around waiting for you to vacate your chair.
