More confused after reading board:)

I'll be in NYC for the first time on business inMarch. I will luckily be able to catch up with some old friends one of which is a coach for the J E T S! Hopefully we will be celebrating a Jet super bowl dinner.
So, I will assume I will be dining alone a couple of nights when not catching up w friends and want somewhere comfortable for a solo. I understand there are a lot of places that will accommodate a solo but I want to fit in to a certain extent if that is distinguishable. I love food, all kinds, but I want a feel for NYC. I will be here from Houston, texas and IMO we do texmex, burgers, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, some Chinese, BBQ, mid level nicest restaurants with insanely good priced wine lists. What I don't think we do well for the most part is french, Italian, pizza(it's getting better), hot dogs and Asian noodles.
I have a limited time but am willing to do early smallish meal and later larger yet not huge meal. I will be eating on my own dime and want my $ to count.
Your help is appreciated. And I appologize in advance because I know this is not the first " first time in NYC" post.
Some of my thoughts...I'm thinking Aldea, momofuku noodle, ristorante degrazia(a friends cousin owns) maybe keste or from my friend that lives here, a patsy's pie which I realize are 2 different types of pizzas.
I was thinking about La Bernadin but am really worried about dropping $250 and not being wowed.
