I love Dona Lolis, I love the chewy fresh homemade corn tortillas, the gorditas, the quesedillas de huitlacoche.
But I feel it necessary to say one thing, lest someone go there and be disappointed - do not order anything coming from the sea. I have warned before about this, but recently with lent going on, I had noticed signs in the window for "tortitas de camarones y nopales y papas" I had no idea what this would be except shrimp, cactus and potatos would be involved, i was picturing little shrimp and cactus sandwiches and I relented, I ordered the seafood.
turns out its a guisado of shrimp patties in mole with cactus and chunks of potato. Cactus had been cooked a long time and had little flavor, potatos and mole were decent with rice and good refried beans and those great corn tortillas but those shrimp patties - I couldn't finish 'em, in fact they had very little shrimp falvor or texture at all, I suspect they are made out of processed dried shrimp meal.
So if you go, don't be swayed by the promise of seafood specials (if you want that go next door) but if you want masa goodness then you are in the right place
