Columbia Kate's Bakery | Tuolumne County - Gold Country

Two months ago I took a quick look around the historic Gold Rush town of Columbia http://www.visitcolumbiacalifornia.com/ before spending the day exploring Stanislaus National Forest. I stopped at Columbia Kate's Bakery to pick up a portable lunch.

The bakery is auxiliary to the tea house. Here you can pick up pastries and snacks. There are also a few tables in the garden to enjoy one's purchases on site.

With the mining history here, I was not surprised to see pasties in the case.

But the even rarer runzas caught my eye instead.

Also known as kraut burgers or beerocks, runzas are more common in Nebraska and the Plains states. Two versions are available, and I picked the more traditional one filled with ground beef, cabbage, onion and Swiss cheese. I asked for it to be heated. Wrapped in a paper bag swathed with napkins it was still warm a couple hours later. Quite plain but wholesome, it made for a hearty lunch break.

I intended to swing back on the day I headed home to try the beef pasty. But unfortunately, I got a late start and had to forego returning to Columbia. So someone else will need to report on that for us.

What else do folks recommend here?
