Colombian in Hicksville, NY

Paul Trapani | Aug 1, 2002 06:31 PM

I tried this new small Colombian restaurant in Hicksville. The Beef Empanadas were made with a cornmeal dough (somehow colored orange on the outside) that seemed to be the perfect container for the savory shredded beef inside. The dough was crispy on the outside and a bit chewy on the inside. I also sampled the Chicharron con arepa (fried pork skin with small corn pancake). In this case there were big pieces of meat attached to the skin. The chicharron were expertly fried and tasted a bit like really good meaty bacon. I couldn’t bring myself to eat all that fat, but I did a good job on the porkier pieces. To drink I ordered Mazamorra, which is white whole kernel corn in milk available with crystallized brown sugar or guava paste. I opted for the brown sugar. Apparently, Mazamorra is more like a cold soup than a drink and was served in one of those big soup mugs with a spoon. I was kicking myself for not ordering the Arroz y Maduro (rice with sweet plantains) when I saw it on the menu after I had placed my order, but I plan on going back soon. They offer a different soup each day served with rice and an arepa (again something to try next time), all for under $6.00. Carne asada and arroz con pollo, looked good too. They serve hearty sounding breakfasts from 9:30 am to noon. Heres a quick rundown of the soups:

Monday
Ox-tail soup

Tuesday
Lentil soup

Wednesday
Chicken soup with pasta

Thursday
Meatball and vegetable soup

Friday
Fish soup

Saturday
Chicken gizzard soup
and
Tripe soup

Sunday
Hen soup
