Last week I needed a spot to take part in an online chat mid-road trip. Triangulation determined that I could be in Santa Cruz at the right time and I picked Coffeeville as my stop for free wifi. I was also interested in it because Coffeeville roasts its own beans. Away from the beach, far from campus, not close to residences, this stretch of Ocean Avenue is more of a thoroughfare from one part of town to the other rather than a destination. And the building itself does not stand out even though there's a patio in front as it was obscured by road construction. I drove past it the first time by.
Coffeeville opened this past December, graduating from a coffee cart in Boulder Creek to a full-blown cafe. I had been looking forward to trying one of the single origin coffee, but discovered that I had hit the low point of the inventory and buying cycle and none were available. My cappuccino was made with a blend of four Tanzania Peaberry sources. A very mild roast, yet mouthfilling with fruit and nut nuances to savor in each sip.
This place is worth a stop. I'll mention that the caramel and chocolate syrups are housemade. I didn't try them, but the significance to me is that this house is not opposed to flavoring coffee and giving customers what they want.
